PERIPHERAL NERVE INJECTION

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

This is a condition characterized by pain in the hand and arm, which may radiate to the elbow and up. The pain is usually associated by numbness and tingling sensation. Other symptoms include discomfort in the pal and rest. This condition is caused by a compressed nerve located in the carpal tunnel.

Inguinal Pain

A pain which affects lower abdomen regions and the area where the torso and legs meet; most commonly this appears as pain and discomfort. In men this may affect the scrotum and testicles. As well as general pain and discomfort, there may be swelling or redness, and sensitivity to touch. This may be caused by injury or hernia.

Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. When irritated, it causes the condition sciatica. Sciatica usually affects one side of the lower body. It’s diagnosed as a pain that radiates from the lower back and down the thigh and leg. The pain can be either sharp and dull, and is usually accompanied by numb or tingling sensation.

What is PERIPHERAL NERVE INJECTION?

Peripheral nerve blocks are utilized to manage nerve pain, also known as neuralgia. Nerve injury can be caused by trauma, compression, ischemia (damage from inadequate blood supply), or toxic exposure to a nerve.

What does the procedure look like?

The procedure involves an injection of a local anesthetic-steroid mixture in proximity to the injured nerve, decreasing the transmission of pain signals to and along the nerve. In some cases, involving sensory nerves, temperature-based therapy such as cryotherapy or radiofrequency lesioning may be used as a long-term pain solution. Terminal cases can call for substances such as phenol and alcohol to be utilized, providing long-term relief. While any complication from this procedure is rare, there may be a risk of infection, bruising, or damage to the nerve. After the injection, any soreness can be managed by applying ice for 20 minutes two to three times a day. If you have any concerns, call Portland Pain and Spine immediately.

We want to assure our patients that Portland Pain and Spine remains open and actively managing your pain. Medication management is given the highest priority. Our relocation across the hall in the Washington building is complete but requires office renovation before we can accommodate patient visits. Staffing shortages affected our ability to communicate last month, however, this was temporary. Dr. Balog has reached out to all patients but asks that if anyone has additional questions or concerns to contact him at balog@pdxpainandspine.com.
We have updated our phone messaging system to assist with calls. There are now options to speak with a live receptionist, leave messages or speak with our new billing company. Medical record requests can be processed on our website at www.pdxpainandspine.com and are handled by Morgan Records Management. Thank you for your patience during this transition. We look forward to providing you high-quality care as we enter into 2024!

Wishing you all a joyful holiday season.
