Trigger Point Injections

What are Trigger Point Injections?

A trigger point injection is when your doctor injects medication directly into tight areas within muscles or fascia that are causing pain. These areas are known as trigger points. In many cases, you can feel them under the skin as a knot or nodule.

The most common medications injected into these points are lidocaine or procaine. Sometimes you’ll receive a steroid with them.

What does the procedure look like?

This procedure is an outpatient procedure that takes place in your doctor’s office. You will either sit or lie down in a position that makes the trigger point easily accessible. Your doctor will clean the skin in the targeted area or above the muscle. Sometimes a local anesthetic will be applied topically to help ensure comfort. In many cases you will receive multiple trigger point injections in the same area. This is to make sure you’ve received complete coverage.
